I have a plan to install about 10-15 feet of split-rail fencing between the driveway and the property line with the neighbor. Then plant several roses along that fence. There is a house I pass by frequently where the owner did just that along the sideway to keep the kids from the high school across the street from cutting thru their front yard. Mine isn't really needed for that, but it would be a start on making our front yard a more private area. Now the problem.....I have found 8 varieties of roses that I really like. I can go with a orangy/brownish combination, inspired by Jan's Hot Cocoa rose along with a Louise Clements and and Imagine. There are the purple colors that I really like, Blue Girl, Heirloom and Fragrant Plum. Or the really pretty Black Beccara, Midnight Blue and Hot Cocoa combo. I goofed and did a google search for the Hot Cocoa and found it and all the others. I do have room on the other side of the yard for another split rail fence with more roses....then there is plenty of room along the front of the yard for still more fencing and roses. Oh,my, there is a really lovely picture starting to form in my mind
Oh, Toni, I have always dreamed of a fence with roses on it. Sigh. I see the images in a magazine with a long wall of blooming bushes and just cave! If you ever need any wild roses, just let me know. Rosa Canina grows like a weed (well, it is considered a weed as well) in our area, but for free, it can't be beat for durability, bloom and scent. MMMM!
That sounds lovely Toni. Can't wait to see pics when they are in bloom. WUVIE, a pic of your wild rose would be nice, I have never seen one.
We have a fence about 20 feet long and currently 10 feet high in front of the shed. It is covered top to bottom, side to side with roses. A good solid wall I can work behind and not be seen from the street. In a good year it has thousands of blooms and blooms twice. It is my favorite.
"I can go with a orangy/brownish combination, inspired by Jan's Hot Cocoa rose along with a Louise Clements and Imagine." I think this colour combination sounds wonderful Toni - something completely different that's sure to be a talking point with passersby. :-D
Wild Roses... Hi Sharon et all, Here is the wild rose picture I mentioned earlier: This is the same rose that everyone complains about. I can't get over the fussing and moaning from the farmers in our area. If you let it go, yes, it becomes a huge mass, but for me, it's gorgeous! We have many of them doing their thing in the back woods, and while they are out of control when unattended, I've been training mine for years. :-D I have one that was planted at the center of a short fence. Over the years, the4 canes have grown whlie I wound them in and out of the metal bars on the fence. True, I have to whack quite a bit of it off after blooming season, but I don't, because I wait for the rose hips, which come in hoards. Another bush is planted at the base of a telephone pole, with a grapevine trellis to support it. I'll never forget the comments when I had a yard sale one year, it was positively bursting with blooms and fragrance. 8) Let me know if you want any of these and I'll be happy to send them for postage come spring / early summer. Karen Marie
Karen, that rose is lovely. Thanks for the offer but I already have a 'wild' type rose that becomes a huge mass. I need to cut it back this month and transplant some of the babies along the front of the house. We have been working for a couple of years to get the old shrubs out along the front, the roses will look better and certainly lower maintenance than trimming shrubs. http://www.gardenstew.com/blog/e285-28- ... -sale.html
I wasn't a rose person but now I have an orcid climber a blaze climber a golden shower climber a Queen Elizabeth and 2 tree roses.
