I have professed dislike of eating squash. The picture on the mixed packet of winter squash appealed to me so I bought it...based on the picture it was a pretty picture. Many of the varieties I had eaten in the past, but not the buttercup or delecata. I have figured out it is just as much about texture as it is flavor for both me and DH when it comes to eating squash. The buttercup was very creamy before it fully ripened. Still mild but not quite as creamy once the seeds are fully formed. We used a more savory grilled recipe for the times we have cooked it up to date. What a surprise when I cooked the the delecata this evening. I baked one for dessert tonight, just splitting it in half lengthwise with a dab of butter and honey and a lot of cinnamon (the shaker dropped a glob). Oh my goodness! It was pudding in a veggie. Truly, just like pudding, creamy and smooth and no squashy taste. So I will gladly eat squash that doesn't have the taste or texture of squash. If it tastes like pudding YEH! I would actually buy this variety and I never buy squash. Will grow the delecata again for sure. Just add a dab of butter, honey and maybe not so much cinnamon ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) I love discovering new to me foods
The squash we get here aren't to my taste at all. I don't like either the taste or the texture. I wonder if any of our shops sell delecata though? If I see any I'll give one a try.
I grew 'Delicata' a few years for that exact reason ... so sweet and delicious! I'm so glad your tried it and loved it too. And they are so easy to grow
