Hi Im a total garden novice. Anything to do with anything in the garden. I have been in a new property for about 1 year now and not really bothered much with the garden. But I feel now I could get some enjoyment out of it and should start to transofrm and care for it. Im not trying to do everything at once and my firt project is to tidy up a border of the drive which is in need of some tidying up. The land here is very rocky and covered in small weeds and I guess moss gowing on the soil which is well compacted at areas. My plan for this area is simply to put decorative chips down to tidy and birghten it up. With this in mind is the best way to deal with the area using some sort of strong weedkiller? There is a bush growing in this area as well which I am unsure about keeping. If I used chemical to cover the area would it affect the bush if I decide to keep it? Have just been digging up larger weeds about and found a label on the bush. Lavatera Rosea. Thanks for any help and I have a feeling I may be here quite alot over the coming months.
WELCOME to GardenStew from a fellow Scot!! I'm from West Lothian - which part are you from? I wouldn't use weedkiller if there are any plants in the bed that you may want to keep scottyboy. If the bed isn't too big then I'd dig it over - removing weeds as I go. Before putting down chippings of any sort you will have to lay down either thick (preferably black) plastic or weed control fabric to help ensure a weed free area. Hi Eileen. Im from East Lothian. The problem is Im in two minds on whether to just flatten the area and put nice chips down and some potted plants. Partially chip it keeping the bush thats there.
