Is there anything that bespeaks hope more than buying a seed packet? I mean, beyond the obvious, stick a seed in the ground and if all goes right, have patty pan squash for dinner in a couple of months. A seed packet means much more than that. A seed packet means the assurance that you will wake up on a late-spring morning, and know that all chance of frost is, in fact gone. It means having a slow cup of tea while contemplating whether the garden needs any more soil amendments. It means getting out the garden boots, your favorite gloves (that you may or may not bother wearing), the hoe, the claw, it means getting out the basket to carry what you need to the garden beds. And getting outside. A seed packet means working quietly in the morning sunshine, with the waking birds letting you know you are part of their world. Alerting the worms that it's time to get busy. Dirty hand, dirty knees, dirty boots, and a good clean smile. It means hope for a fresh dinner of herbs and tomatoes, of spicy peppers and onions. It means the faith that there will be water enough to sprinkle, sunshine enough to nurture, plants strong enough to resist invasion by disease and pest. It means... hope. Not bad for $1.49.
To be honest, my thoughts don't go that deep when I buy a seed packet...I have lots of them. I hardly buy seedlings. But I do enjoy the wait for germination and just all that comes with it...beauty and food!
Lovely thoughts for just 1 packet. Now lets times that by about 20, which would be the # of packets I just bought.
$1.49 is quite a bargain for that experience alright. Sure some might argue that there is work involved in bring it from seed to plant but is it really 'work'? Very enjoyable piece of writing Critter, thanks.
