Some of you may be wondering where I've been today so let me explain. My 24 year old daughter, Laura, was taking part in a cycling decathlon today, near Peebles, here in Scotland. She was part of a team made up of her workmates. Ian and I decided to go and surprise her by cheering her on at the finish line as it was a beautiful, sunny day. On our arrival in the car park we saw someone loading our daughters bicycle into a van. Presuming that the race was ending and they were transporting the bikes off somewhere we thought nothing of it. An ambulance with paramedics buzzing around it was also in the car park. We got out of the car only to be greeted with the news that it was Laura in the ambulance!!!! Instead of cheering her at the finishing line I joined her in the ambulance and Ian loaded her bike into our car and then followed us back to Edinburgh and The Royal Infirmary. She's in a pretty bad way but has no broken bones thank goodness. She has stitches in both elbows and inside her mouth - a tooth pierced right through her cheek - and she has a concussion!! Her legs, stomach, bottom and arms are torn and raw. Her poor face is all swollen and cut and she has a black eye. I have the feeling that she won't be taking part in any more cycling events for a looooong time. I'm just pleased that she's alive and well as the accident could have been sooo much worse. Ian and I are off on holiday to Holland on Thursday 3rd. May and, hopefully, by then Laura should be feeling more like herself again.
Sorry to hear about Laura's accident. I hope she will soon be feeling well and up and around. I am so glad she was not seriously injured. Glad you and Ian were there for her. I can imagine any ambulance ride is terrifying and she was fortunate to have you to ride with her.
Oh my gosh! Thank goodness she'll be OK Eileen! I can just imagine how your heart was racing when you found out it was Laura in the ambulance!
Eils what a scare for you and Ian. Do you know how the accident happened? Very glad to hear that Laura wasn't seriously hurt. Oh my! Hope she heals quickly. Best wishes. // Frank
She thinks she must have hit some rocks on the path. She was travelling at approximately 40mph at the time - downhill. She had full competition cycle 'armour' on but she still got knocked out.
Oh how scared you must have been. I know being a mom of 4. You never quit worrying about your kids. Thank god she will be fine! Try to sleep well, i know its hard..lots of hugs... Kat
Poor Laura! Poor mum and dad!! Oh Eileen, what a shocking day you've all had. I'm so sorry that Laura was injured, but I share your relief that it was no worse. I can only imagine what a comfort it must have been to Laura when you appeared in time to see her through the ambulance ride and checking into the hospital. I do hope that she's feeling much more comfortable soon.
Heaven's, how awful but how GREAT that you were right there. I can't imagine a time when she was more comforted by your presence.
Oh, Eileen, what a scare. Glad she is going to be okay. I know how scary that was for you and Ian. Lisa had a bike accident years ago, but was in Santa Fe, New Mexico and I couldn't go to her.
Thanks for all your good wishes. :-D It's nice to be able to share our troubles with friends as it really does help knowing you're all out there thinking of my daughter and hoping she recovers quickly. I'm going to let her read all your messages as they'll cheer her up I'm sure.
Eileen, I hope everything is ok. Please let us know when she gets out of the hospital. I can imagine she has a serious case of road rash.
Hells bells Eileen! Bet Ian and your hearts went into overdrive when you realised it was your Laura in the ambulance. Cor, I bet she is as sore as a sore thing could be, poor love. These urchins of ours don't realise the worry they put us through! So relieved she is okay, if a touch sore. I bet you are going to spoil her rotten now!
