We have a brush pile in the wooded area off to the side of our yard. We use it to put dead branches etc. Also in the fall we have the big bean pods off of the locust trees. This evening we had 4 deer down there eating the bean pods. I'm glad that something is benefiting from them. If I had access to some hay, I would put it out for them.
Captain, we have never seen deer here on our farm. Tracks around the pond, yes, but actual sightings of deer--never. However, when I was going out to the barn this evening about 6 p.m., I looked at the pond to see if we had ducks. No ducks, but two deer taking a drink! I think that the shallower drinking areas they use are frozen over, so they came out earlier to drink at the pond. A neighbor leaves one of the big round bales of hay in his field near Sandy Creek for deer to feed on in the winter if they need it. It sounds as if your bean pods are winter fodder, also. Your brush pile may be providing shelter for all sorts of birds and small mammals.
Dh put out cracked corn for them and pheasants . And seen them eating out of compost pile-carrot and tatter peeling
We have 4 deer that hit the pile almost every day. They were down there 3 times today. The last I saw them was just before dark.
I buy cracked corn from the mill across the road and give it to my neigbor and he feeds the deer. We have deer walking around the property every night. It looks like a petting zoo. Somebody said deer like alfalfa pellets, but they're more expensive.
