First I thought it was too much shade now maybe not enough. My tomato is giving me 2 more tomatoes and the leaves are curling up worse. I water them EVERY morning and installed an umbrella to give some shade (not complete) to the plants and I'm almost at whits end. Help me ed My Problem ( photo / image / picture from Edlou8181's Garden )
I've only grown tomatoes a couple of times... so I'm definitely no expert... however I'd suggest cutting back on the water. Everyday may just be too much. And I think I'd let them get more sunlight. I'm sure one of the "real" veggie gardeners will come in with more definitive advice. Good luck!
Tomatoes need full sun, that's at least 6 hours of full sun a day so you really need to remove the shade and let them bask in the sun. And like Cheryl said, cut back on the watering, only water when the soil is dry. Does the pot they are in have a drainage hole? If not, they may be sitting in water and the roots will rot.
Well Ed, I'm not exactly sure what you are asking here, but I assume you are concerned about the leaf roll. If they aren't yellow, dropping, off, you don't see any insects on the backs of the leaves, spots all over the lower leaves... I wouldn't worry too much, but do check to see how moist the soil is before you water.Push your finger down into the soil at least to your middle knuckle. if it it moist to there , don't water. check again later in the day. if it needs water then, water without getting the foliage wet. Wet foliage at night time invites fungal disease. and like Toni said at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. They may not need the shade as much now as they did when they were young and tender.
Like everyone here, and I said before. Cut back on the water, more sun, as far as the leaf curl, if plant seems healthy and it must be or you wouldn`t get tomatoes, don`t worry about it. Mine are almost rolling into a cigar shape, but I still have more tomatoes than I know what to do with. Best crop in years. If this is what the leaf curl does, I hope mine do the same next year.
