Everyone, everywhere has heard some of the old sayings and most have to do with weather predicting. But I am sure that there are some from your part of the world that others have not heard. One of the most famous is about Groundhogs Day. If the groundhog comes out of his burrow and see's his shadow you will have six more weeks of winter! But if you look at the calendar from Feb. 2nd to March 20th, the first day of spring, it's six weeks anyhow! We can have some fun with this one. What are some local sayings that others may not have heard? I heard a new one the other day. After you hear the first Katydid call, it will frost within 6 weeks! What are your favorite saying's ?
"God willin', and the creek don't rise" to denote something that will hopefully happen (or not). The original saying was "the Cree don't rise" which referenced the Cree Indian tribe. If the Cree rose, the settlers were in for a hard time!
Here's an old Scottish saying meaning don't cast off your winter clothes until May is over. Ne're cast a clout 'til May is oot.
When we were on a Windjammer cruise, we heard this one: Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning. We were in the Caribbean, with a diesel engine powering our "sail" boat, so we didn't pay much attention to the sky. Basically every day was a sailor's delight!
