Everyone has sayings etc about gardening weather and what ever. What are your favorite ones?

Mine are the one about the Wooley Bear caterpillar predicting the winter weather, also that you will have 3 snows after the Forsythia blooms and always plant you potatoes on Good Friday for a good crop!

    Let's hear your favorite ones!

Two of the ones I can remember is to prune your roses back on Valentine's Day and there's still a chance of cold weather until the pecan trees bud out.

I try to have my cucumber seedlings in the ground by the first weekend in April so they will have time to produce a good crop before the heat sets in around here.

I forgot to prune the rose bushes last month, but the pecan trees show no sign of budding out....hmmmm, wonder if I could get more snow this year afterall? :smt038

If you have never had a coal fired furnace or built a coal fire then you will probably hear these sayings only as whispers caught by a tree as the wind passes through its branches.

A storm approaches when the coals of your fire alternately glow bright and dim.

When the coals are covered with white ash, depending on the season, there will be snow or rain.

In cold weather if the chimney soot falls the weather will change.

If the soot on your cooking pot sparks then rain will soon follow.

Time to put the coal shovel away.

    Jerry

P.S. Advice from a fireman who shoveled coal many years on a puffer belly that is still valid for today. Shovel coal continuously with your back bent over, don't straighten up unless you are stopping. Works with snow and dirt too.
