Howdy! I am in Covington, Louisiana this morning (and last night) after driving from Dallas for 500+ miles with my brother. We're on our family vacation, heading to Florida. We drove from Dallas to Shreveport, down to Alexandria & Lafayette, then through Baton Rouge. We spent the night in a hotel in Covington, which according to the map sits just North of Lake Ponchartrain. We'll make a leisurely drive today to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and meet up with our wives & daughters, who fly into Florida from Dallas today. My dad is flying in from Colorado and my youngest brother is already in the peninsula of Florida with his pregnant wife & 2 kids (he took them on his long business trip through Georgia & Florida). Oddly, we're actually closer to the beach house my dad rented than anybody right now. Cajunbelle, I am reminded once again how beautiful Louisiana is! Green, green, green!! Since I don't live near it, crossing the Mississippi Rivier for me is a momentous occasion. At least when I was a kid, my parents made a big deal out of crossing it. It still gives me a charge no matter which way I'm going. I guess it's like the aorta of America. Love the Spanish moss hanging from the trees too! I'll try to post from the beach - especially if I find something horticulturally interesting, or if we catch glimpses of cool sea critters.
I think you'll need some quality time of rest and relaxation after all that travelling. Thanks for keeping in touch with us. Hope you have fun with all your family.
Thanks for taking time to post a travel note. I hope you'll enjoy yourselves and relax and have lots of fun.
I love Louisiana too.We use to have hanging moss here on my property but little by little it has disappeared. I hope you have a wonderful vacation and reunion with all your family.
WTD, I hope you and your family enjoy the vacation. Thanks for all the compliments about Louisiana. I know what you mean about the Mississippi River. I was raised less than a mile from it in a little town called Darrow on La. Hwy. 22. I crossed it every school day for 8 years, twice a day on a ferry boat. I have many fond memories of "The River." Here is a link to one of them, sorry to say it doesn't have a happy ending: http://www.gardenstew.com/blog/e529-24- ... -pond.html
