There are a few shooting star flowers and I have photographed only three of them. This is the most common. Broad leaved shooting star. ( photo / image / picture from Kildale's Garden )
Beautiful! I'm trying to think of something else to say... but I think "beautiful" sums it up nicely.
Kildale, Is this connected to a bulb???? It is soooo wonderful. Please tell us something more about it??? Barb in Pa.
The seeds can be harvested and should be put in the fridge for 2 or 3 months. There are many species. I have one from the alpine area and two from the lower elevations. These are other two that I have. ( photo / image / picture from Kildale's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Kildale's Garden )
These flowers remind me of the shuttlecocks I played with when I used to go to Badminton. The nearest thing we have here that resembles your Shooting stars are Cyclamen. The backward facing petals make it easy for the seeds to disperse and spread. Very pretty little members of the primrose family and thanks for sharing them with us all.
Very nice ones. For a couple (2-3) years I've been trying to germinate seeds. I think I managed, but I was anxious, and planted the really small plants out in the garden. I am still not sure, after two years, if I have any plants surviving in my garden. Do you have pics of the plants/leaves/small seedlings ??? I have a few plants in my garden that could be THEM, but I have nothing to compare with!
Dodecatheon is the proper Botanical name and to tell the species apart you need a very good magnifying glass to count the hairs inside the corolla. They are small herbaceous perennials which tend to die away soon after flowering. I have a couple of them in the Alpine house as for some reason they do not like it here. They are actually Primulacaea, so related to Primroses. There are about 15 species and a few varieties and sub-spcies. Dodecatheon meadia alba ( photo / image / picture from Palustris's Garden )
These are the three species from the wild that I have taken.Broad-leaved shooting star, Dodecatheon hendersonii, Few flowered shooting star,Dodecatheon pulchellum, Tall mountaing shooting star, Dodecatheon jeffrey.
