I just put an entry in my blog about Oslo. There are lots of photos and some history too. I hope you'll like this first entry. I will have to make at least one more. Here are some appetizers:

Droopy, are there any web sites that give a better understanding of the burial mound? Perhaps a cross section.

    Great pictures, great history.

    Thanks Jerry.

I'm sorry but I have also been looking for some drawings or photos from the excavation. It was done in 1904 so don't get your hopes up.

There are plenty of photos and historical facts on the net. The customs vary a bit depending on where the deceased lived and how wealthy they were. Some were interred with ship, slaves, animals, crockery, jewelry, clothes and whatnot in order to spend the afterlife in comfort. The mounds were raised around the ship and consisted of stone and earth. Others were torched after an eleborate ceremony. Those who fell while on expeditions either got a small stone mound and were given only the bare necessities or got a sea burial.

What a nice display, Droopy. I really enjoyed these and especially the detail shots.
New stuff is all well and good, but I prefer the old, historical things. i shall have a look at your blog now and see what else you have displayed.
    This is a GREAT posting!

Hi Drooy; I have always loved history as well. Great info and pic's. I have seen a special on our PBS local station here in Wisconsin on the burial mounds and the history behind them. Now if I could only remember what they said. :-? I know it was very interesting.
You could try a search on their website and see what comes up. It's PBS.com. :stew1:
