They were planted a couple of years ago. The first year, was a typical herb year, where you wonder if you've picked a good spot. Last year caterpillars ate them. Brightly colored striped ones, sort of like Monarch. They do need more sun, but they're doing ok, just short, not quite four feet high.

    That's coming along quite well.
    Congrats.
I wonder what kind of caterpillers they were.

Last year we lost our camera, if they come back, i'll be sure to take their pictures. Never saw any cocoons or odd butterflies though. Maybe the wrens ate them, serves them right. :D

Your fennel looks good. I planted some this yr and its about a foot high. But i put the seeds in about june, so their doing about right for where i live. I should have flowers, maybe, about september.

Will you save your seeds for cooking? And did you use the leaves, or feathers as like to call them, or did you just plant for decoration.

Peppersage, my fennel never got to bloom last year because of the caterpillars and I was thrilled.
Those are caterpillars of the Black Swallowtail butterfly.

Yep looked it up, that's the critters that ate my fennel.

We're not sure what to do with it, it just taste so good we had to get some. Sort of like liquorice. Whenever i walk by i just have to nibble.

We'll separate the feathers from the seeds, and hunt for recipes.
