Hello everybody! New to this site, and hoping to find some advice concerning my yard. Here's the details...

I bought my home in Orlando back in January of 2005. A turn of events forced me to leave the home behind and rent until now. The yard was beautifully landscaped at the time, and now has become overrun with all sorts of plants. Aside from the grass growing where it's not supposed to (between stones, etc.) and not always growing where it should, the main culprit seems to be a fern that has taken over everything. I decided to just start pulling it out, and after doing a small section in front (where it's not nearly as overrun as the back), I have a few questions now.

    1. There's still a huge network of roots/bulbs in the soil. Does all of this need to come up as well?

    2. Do I risk pulling out other desirable plants if I do pull it all out?

    3. Should the fern have a place in the yard?

I'll try to post pics ASAP. I feel so guilty for letting this once beautiful yard get so overgrown, but I intend on restoring it to the level it once was now that I have the time to. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

How much money do you have?

If I were wealthy, I'd strip it all down and rebuild. But I'm not, so I'd say take your time and inch by inch rebuild... thin out... redistribute... Now's the time to do it with the great weather we've been having in Florida! Good luck and God speed!

I would have to see pictures to give better advice. Generally you want to remove as much of the root as possible.

I'm afraid I should go with Lets Plant. We should see the picture first.

Sounds like it needs thinning, pruning, some TLC. For the fern, yes, I'd take out as much bulb/root as possible. You may be able to trade or give away the plants to neighbors if you like doing such things.
