...it means, Pancake Evening....and I got invited over to a pal's house for a meal this past weekend.

Pannenkoeken are very thin pancakes, sort of like crêps ...and the size of a skillet bottom.
These Dutch delights are available in restaurants and café's all over the country. One can even buy the batter mix in the supermarket and make them their selves.

They can be filled with anything that you want, but I prefer them with bacon.
Once you have removed a pannenkoek from the pile and placed it on your plate, you then smear a bit of butter (or margie) across it, add thick syrup or molasses and roll it up.
Then to eat it, you cut the roll into a bite size piece and pop it into your mouth. Mmmmmmmm....what a delight.

Pannenkoeken can be eaten all year round, but for some reason, I like them better when the weather turns cold.
Well, that's how we do it, so let's get started!

First of all you lay out your bacon and let it come to room temp.

Then you mix up the batter and put the skillets on the fire to warm up.

Next you add some veg. oil to the pan...

...and then you drop some pieces of bacon into your skillet and let them cook for a bit.

Then you pour the batter around and over the bacon, 1-2-3 until the entire bottom of the pan is covered (bacon and all).

You fry them one after the other until all the batter is gone, placing the pancakes on a plate which is sitting on top of a saucepan with water in it. The idea here is to keep them warm and moist (you cover the stack with a pan lid to hold in the heat and moisture.

And here is the stack, ready for consumption, The yellow cup is full of molasses.
    Bon appétit.

My, those really look good. I love pancakes on a wintery night, that's my second favorite winter supper.
I have never made them with the bacon in them but I'm thinking we need to try that.

I find the different shapes and types of bacon found 'round the world very interesting.

I'm craving pancakes with bacon now. :D We use bacon cut into little pieces and drizzle them on top of the batter in the skillet. Our pancakes are thicker than yours. I like Dutch pancakes a lot. *drooling*

Like a fool I volunteered to host a luncheon for the gardening volunteers (eight of us) while we "plot" out what we'll do next year for the community patio gardens.
Now I know what to serve! Your pannekoken are just what is needed, and also thanks for the pictorial tutorial. I'll serve some homemade applesauce, the bacon pancakes, and have a fruit cup with yogurt for finishers.
Gosh, I can't thank you enough, Sjoerd!

oh yummy! i love pancakes! never tried making crepes or this type, but i think it's a must now, after your pics!

when reading the above about you liking them filled with bacon, i thought you meant putting bacon in them and rolling them up! to me, the way you cook the bacon 'in' them is a wonderful concept!!! :D

    great post sjoerd...it deserves a 'seed'! :D

forgot a couple of questions...is this like a thin pancake, watering down the recipe? or more like eggy kind of mixture? gotta find a recipe...

NETTY & FRANK--Thanks for your nice comments.

TONI--Thanks lots. It might be fun for you to make them. When I make them, I usually fry the bacon crisp, but not my pal.
We have several types of bacon here--this type tastes just like yours, and I like that best.

Hahaha...Why EILEEN, that's the nicest thing anyone has said to me in a long time. hahaha.

Oops, sorry about that, DROOPY. heh heh heh. I'll bet that your pancakes taste similar, though.

Well now! That is something I didn't expect to hear. I'll bet the other folks on your committee will be surprized and happy to get them. It sounds like you've got all the trimmings too. Oh, that is going to be some luncheon.

    Hee hee hee....sorry, DOOLEY.
    I'm happy to see you.

Thanks loads, Bunkie--chuckle...yes, I see that I could have worded it differently. 'Scuse me.
The pancake is thin because it is a certain type of batter, not watered-down regular batter.
Let me know how your search goes.

Oh Kay... they were, they were. I ate myself to the point of dyspnea.
I don't usually have much of a stomach, but I was 'round' that night, that's for sure. It was good that I had a 20 min. bike trip home afterwards.

Well Bunkie, it looks like you had no trouble finding websites with pannenkoeken on them. You know....(and I'm whispering)....I've been wanting to try one with blueberries for some time. I shall have to do it on the sly, lest my family finds out and begins ex-connunication procedures. ;)

Actually though, people put all manner of things in them--I guess it's just want one prefers.
