Today, we went to the nursery just to see what they had. We have room for a tree and they have bare root trees this time of year. No trees. They had trees but we were sidetracked by the pansies. We bought 36 pansies. 24 big ones and 12 small ones. The small ones just look like pansies. They are called viola's or Johnny Jump Ups. It's about all they had this early. I need to see if I can get them planted tomorrow. Or I can keep them in their little pots until next week because we are supposed to have rain or snow again this weekend. Would it be better to plant them before it rains or snows or wait until after? Maybe they need more time to get their roots established before it rains or snows on them. Choices or decisions. I can't seem to make either. Dooley
I have winter pansies in with my cordyline in a pot by the front door. They were winter pansies all in flower when I bought them before Christmas, then as the cold weather came, they promptly stopped flowering and just sat sitted there....however, now the days are warmer (just) and longer I noticed lots of new buds emerging so am hoping in a week or so, lots of lovely colour! What sort of tree did you fancy Dooley?
I have violas....isnt that what Jonny Jump ups are? I have a whole packet of seeds for them. I also have a purple unknown kind. I bought it because they said it would with stand froze. And it did. But now its changing. I think its because of the weather change. In the winter, the flowers are a deep purple. Now when it gets hot, they are turning a light blue sometimes white. Its really pretty to see them mixed. Some will have the tops as purple and the bottoms as light blue. I have them in a pot and they are doing great.
Dooley I have what you call 'jonny Jump Ups' in hanging baskets outside my front door and they withstand all kinds of weather. They are still flowering now even after all the frost, snow, hail, rain and gale force winds. I think they'll do fine if you transplant them now as long as they are popped into a good quality, multi-ourpose compost. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Pansies, violas, violets and johnny jump ups are all the same family of plants. (Violaceae) Pansies are big violets. Mostly the difference seems to be size and colors. Dooley Oops! I'm on the wrong site. This one belongs to Desert Rat. Don't tell anyone, please! Dooley
I planted my pansies yesterday. I have two hanging baskets, a large bowl and some in the step beds. But, I noticed something has been chewing on the petals of the ones I planted a couple of weeks ago. I bet it is those earwigs getting an early start. I guess I'd better buy a big jar of molasses next time I go to Prescott. dooley Oh, I bought Newton Pippen apple trees. I may have room for another tree but we won't know until next week. dooley
We always have a problem with sparrows here Dooley. They tear the petals off my pansies and attack my crocus's. Strangely enough they never touch the purple flowers only the ones that are yellow or have yellow in them. :? Hope you get your earwig problem under control before they destroy any more of your plants.
I squashed a big ole earwig today. I was moving a flower pot and he was hiding under it. We have a lot of sparrows so I'll watch for them in the pansies. The pansies are sort of under the tree where the sparrows always sit. Dooley
