A while ago I posted about men not being able to grow parsley ( its a witch thing ) this week we had two good days of nice weather . Result : 48 pots of parsley , yippee even Mrs Bugs is surprised it has taken 8 weeks to germinate , also germinated , Marigolds ( calendula) onions , horseradish .Its great to see things finally starting to move . :? Glad to hear it, Bugs. All my lavender that I grew from seeds are dead. Man that stuff is hard to grow! I dont think Im doing parsley this year. I had it last year but those bugs had their way with them. I know Im doing oregno. I had so much fun with it last year. Sage too. Im going to try rosemary again this year. I couldnt get it to grow. Of course my mints. What other herbs do you have for the garden?
Now does that make you a warlock then Bugs!!! My parsley is looking rather grim at the moment but my chives are now about 4" high!!! My lavender seems to have been killed off with all the frosts so I'll have to plant up some more soon.
Warlock indeed !!!!!!! I'm so happy that I'm going to do another 100 pots tomorrow my chives are not as big as yours Eileen. Mine are outside for the winter (100 pots )and are just peeping above ground , I find them tastier left exposed to the frost ( lovely with new potatoes and good Irish butter ) Another herb I always grow is Fennel ( great with fish ) One of my hobbies is deep sea fishing on the west coast of Ireland . Mrs. Bugs favourite is Mackerel and fennel sauce . The fish is cooked immediately after catching ( is that fresh ) 8) Bugs
I have 20 little pots with lavender. Some have started to come up so I am hopeful the others will soon follow. I will start the other herbs tomorrow as Brian says the greenhouse will be ready for them. The other things coming up in the pots are ones that someone sent me from Scotland which wasn't exactly kosher. Dooley
OK, I was late as usual with my herb garden and I live in Chicago which to those of you who are not in USA...it is in a cold climate....it has been warm for almost a month now since we had some chlly weather in early June...... I just got done planting my dill and cilantro...so I just want to know that how long before I can use them....
Well, both are best harvested just prior to the plant flowering. Give it about 30-45 days if you just planted seed. The dill will get about waist high and get big flat loose heads of yellowish flowers. You can snip sprigs off of it anytime and use it in your cooking/canning/pickling. I harvest mine in a big bunch right as the flowers fade and turn to seed, tie it together and hang it upside down in a brown grocery bag to dry. Then I remove the dried seeds from the stem and pack them in air-tight jars. Same with the cilantro. Keep snipping the flower heads off to encourage thicker growth. I chop this up roughly and freeze it in ziplock bags. Both are very generous re-seeders. If either are left to seed, you will have more next year. I will let some dill seed out, but beware of the cilantro! Very aggressive little bugger. It will seed all over the garden. ps. The seeds of the cilantro plant are called coriander. Read more...
