Hi Everyone, I have a question my peony died back last winter ,but now I see it trying to come back at the root, Do you think I could take it up and replant it somewhere else? or do you think its to early?
    Thank you Margie

I have to ask, is this a tree peony or a normal peony? Our peonies die back every autumn, and grow back from the roots every spring. That's what they're supposed to do. The tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa) are different. They grow like shrubs.

You can dig a Peony up and move it, but it may well sulk for a couple of years. Also, you should not plant it any deeper than it was in the first place or it could just give up and die, or grow leaves, but never a flower. If you do dig it up, give it a good old drink before starting to move it, and then when it is in it's new home, give it another good drink. Good luck!

Sounds like it is behaving just like it is supposed to ;) I think I read somewhere that you move peonies in the fall  You're lucky. I won't see mine for at least a month :'(

Stratsmom's account is what I also know about Peonies. And they do best in cooler regions with deep rich soil, in the full sun.
And EJ is correct because they are indeed propagated by division in winter or spring. THe flowers are normally borne fromspring through fall and thus after flowering you may move your Peonies. :stew1:

I LOVE peonies -- or "pee-yonies" as they're pronounced here in Virginia. Sounds like your peony is doing just fine but I agree with EJ -- you can transplant but it'll probably sulk for a while. You could always get a new peony for the spot you had eyed for the transplant...

There's nothing like those gorgeous peonies. I've never done a tree peony -- are they hardy in zone 7b in the US?

Some are, veebur. You just need to find the right one for your climate.

Cool, Droopy. I'll see what I can find and let you know how it goes.
