I have some seeds and will try some Pepino this year. I re-read Sjoerds post http://www.gardenstew.com/about9058.html and have decided to grow them in pots on the back porch where they will get full sun and be protected from the wind. Has anyone grown them in pots and what size pots would you suggest using?
Hiyah Netty...you daring one! I hope that you have great success growing this plant. I would suggest that you use a patio pot with a diameter of not less than 40cm (15.7 inches) for best results. I understand that the smaller the pot--the smaller the fruits. The plants that I grew, I fed every other week and had tremendous results, both in fruit size and number. I thinned the bunches uit and got some whoppers!
Thanks Sjoerd, I should have known to ask you! In the meanwhile, I need to get these seeds to germinate. I'm going to try them the same way I do my tomato's...in peat pods on the window sill. Don't 'ya love trying new stuff?
Boy, I sure do, Netty--I liked these fruits fine, but my bride didn't. That was too bad, because one can take cuttings and they root very easily for the following year. Just one thing...if you get so far (taking cuttings) do it before the first frost.
Here is one of those Pepino seedlings today In a couple of days I'll put it in a bigger pot and put it on the back porch. 4 out of 5 of those seeds germinated for me
