I've heard of these mushrooms before but never seen one. Gomphus clavatus are edible aren't they?

They say it is edible, and good according to the literature.

I'd probably give it a try. I love mushrooms.

Interesting picture. I now know what Pigs Ears(Gomphus clavatus) look like. Not knowing about mushrooms, however, the only mushrooms I would eat come from restaurants or the grocery store. Walking in the woods I probably walk right past some delicious fungi, and thats where they stay.

Question: How can one tell if a Mushroom is edible, or poisonous?

And I've also heard that there are actually 3 types of Mushrooms, one that is safe to eat, one which is toxic, and one that is said to have a narcotic effect (able to cause powerful hallucinations) - So is there any truth to this? How can one tell which one belongs to which category?

I've never eaten any from the wild. I only go out to photgraph them, the experts name them for me and we put them in my website. We put them into groups, but not the groups you ask about. You can see over 200 images that I have taken by clicking Fungi Have a browse.
