My Downy Hawthorn (Crataegus mollis) has fruit that's only a little smaller than the ripe fruits, but is still green; most of the fruit looks normal, but some has pink, elongated protrusions covering it. Very thoroughly covered fruits resemble pink bottlebrushes. What is this, and is it very dangerous to either the tree or birds who eat infected fruits?
