Back on Dec 9th, Randy and I went to the annual Christmas dinner for the Ham Club he is a member of. The chicken was okay, the mashed potatoes were wonderful, the green beans were at least cooked properly and typical peach cobbler for dessert.....don't these people ever think that something chocolate would have been much more welcome
    Anyway, I digress.

They hand out numbered tickets for the prize drawing. There were ten prizes prettily wrapped sitting on one of the tables. After the dinner, the drawings began, the last number drawn was for the grand prize. During the first 9 draws the numbers seemed to be concentrated on two tables of people on one end of the dinning room, numbers no where near the ones I or Randy had. They got to the grand prize and called out the first three numbers...which were the same on all tickets....then called out the number zero....which I had....then the number 7...which was the next number on my ticket....then the number zero....which was MINE!!! I was shocked to say the least and had to go up front to open the gift. As I opened the box, not being a ham radio operator myself....I mentioned that if the box contained either chocolate or Johnny Depp I would be really happy. Randy said the club president's wife really got a laugh from that. But it turned out to be a really nice hand-held HAM radio that had all the men drooling....but not as much as the women would have been drooling if Johnny Depp had been in the box.

Negotiations began between Randy and I about what I would get if I gave him the radio. Actually I already knew what I wanted out of the deal....one of the online plant nurserys had a special going - free shipping with orders of $100 or more. The radio was worth a little more than that so a deal was struck and it was certainly a win-win situation.

Getting to the plant order, I placed it last night, meeting the deadline of midnight January 2nd and chose the week of March 21st as my shipping date.

    I ordered.....

    1 - Monarda 'Jacob Kline'
    1 - Salvia 'Maraschino'
    1 - Salvia pitcheri 'Grandiflora'
    1 - Solidago 'Wichita Mountains'
    1 - Veronia baldwini
    3 - Mahonia repens
    1 - Viburnum lentago
3 - Scutellaria resinosa 'Smokey Hills'
    1 - Rosa eglanteria

I have found other species/cultivars of all of these plants locally but not these particular ones. Now I have two and a half months to get the front yard ready for them. I will have to move some plants already out there but isn't that the way it goes when you garden?

And yes, since this order didn't quite add up to the cost of the radio, I have another order in the making for an assortment of vines I have been wanting.

OOOhhhh, what species of passies are we talking about ;)
    I have:
    p. edulis 'Frederick'
    p. edulis 'flavacarpa'
    p. foetida
    p. incarnata
    p. actinia
    p. ligularis
    p. caerulea
    p. vitifolia (red passion)
*All except ligularis and caerulea I have cloned rooted cuttings of. If any were on your order list, I could easily send you rooted ones in spring so you'd be free to choose other vines. the ligularis and caerulea i've directly grown from seed, and i think will still be too small to travel this spring.
