I am a creature of habit so there is a particular route I take on a plant shopping morning which usually happens about 4 times a year. I take Randy's pickup truck so I can get larger plants if I find some, ones that won't fit in the trunk of my car. First stop, is Lowe's they always has several sale racks to pick thru but yesterday there wasn't anything I wanted on them, mainly annuals that even here will have a very few weeks left. But I did find 8 plants that just begged to come home with me.

Then I go to Home Depot, they never have sales but they do have many plants that the other garden centers don't have. Trouble with Home Depot appears to be that whoever is in charge of shipping fall planting bulbs to the stores doesn't know that we have almost two more months to get them in the ground so after they sold out early this month there won't be another shipment coming in. I think I need to contact their corporate office and explain the mistake in their planning. I found 6 plants there, they just sorta jumped into my cart and put down roots.

Then I come home to unload what I have, home is between the second and third stop and being blown around by the wind and falling over rolling out of their pots just isn't good for the plants
Then I go to Calloway's, then back home. Only found one plant and some bulbs, they tend to over load on Pansies and Pumpkins this time of year so shopping there wasn't as much fun.

    Yesterday's trip netted me ......
    For the front yard,
    3 Butterfly weed, Asclepias curassavica
1 small pot of rust color Chrysanthemums
2 pots of Gerbera Daisy, one red and one orange
1 pot containing about 3 Pineapple Lily, Eucomis 'Coco'

    For the backyard,
    2 Butterfly weed, Asclepias curassavica
    2 Lantana camara 'New Gold'
1 Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii, Turk's Cap
1 Butterfly Bush, Buddleja davidii.....color blue but no name on the pot

Also picked up several bulbs for fall planting,
    Amaryllis belladonna
Hyacinth 'Jan Bos' these are bright red.
Lycoris radiaa - Red Spider Lily
    Rhodophiala bifida - Oxblood Lily

Oh, and at Lowe's the indoor section that had been outdoor furniture and indoor plants is now all Christmas!! At least Calloway's is decorating for fall this year instead of filling up with Christmas in August like a couple of years ago.

    Today is for planting ;)

Sound like a great plant shopping trip. I was planning on stopping at Lowe's on the way home to see if they've put anything good on their markdown racks yet.
    Happy planting today!

As far as Christmas, I saw a house yesterday with decorations out in the yard already!!! Whatever happened to Christmas coming after Halloween and Thanksgiving?????
sheesh.... no wonder I'm becoming a bigger Scrooge every year.

Gosh you did well Toni on your plant buying spree. I've had to curtail my spending on anything for the garden this year as I've no space for anything new. :( It's good to know that someone is going to have some fun with planting though. :-D Do let us see all the plants once you've got them settled in.

Sounds like an awesome trip!! I need to buy some tulip bulbs pretty soon. Yesterday I had one of the boys drop off a HUGE old tractor wheel at my house that I plan to use as a planter. Sometimes working in a tire store has it's advantages :p I thought this wheel would make a great portable planter because it's about 31/2 feet wide and 20 inches deep. Fill with dirt, plant bulbs and wa-lah ;) I agree with you about stores ordering and shipping plants at inappropriate times  Sometimes they just don't understand things at the corporate level. Sheesh

Oh, envy, envy, envy! The nearest thing to a plant store is about 25 miles from here and it's one-stop shopping, nothing green in-between.
Lowe's and Home Depot are the places I buy vegetable starts. Their garden plants seem to be chosen by someone at the corporate headquarters, which are NOT in central Texas. Can't imagine why they keep trying to foist azaleas off on us with alkaline soils, and I've seen peonies for sale there, too. Good luck with that one!
Your plants will be lovely in the your yard. Please post pictures as previously requested, and we'll all get over our envy attack (eventually).

I'd LOVE to have a day like that Toni! And I wish I had a truck so I could buy tree's when I see them on sale.
I hope I don't see anything Christmas until at least the middle of November!

Well... Toni did it to me again. I stopped at Lowe's yesterday to see what they had on the mark down rack. Not much this time, mostly Gerbera Daisies and some annuals... and nothing really looked worth having. But I did notice some signs here and there saying 50% off.
So I picked up a Petite Salmon Oleander ($3.50).

Then I noticed a rack full of Confederate/Star Jasmines. 3 for $10! Couldn't pass that up!

I had to make myself leave the store before I spent all my money!

hehehehe, the enabler of plant obsessions everywhere strikes again :smt040

The plants bought for out back have been put into the ground. I purposely didn't take photos of the before because it was so terrible looking out there, didn't want anyone to see what I had had to let happen to the beds during the summer.
Soon as I get the photos sized I will post what I did yesterday.

Ah Cheryl, you just had to rub it in, didn't you? Three lovely oleanders AND star jasmines. Why, oh, why do y'all do this to me?
I'll get my revenge--I'll take a day and go to Chamblee's Roses and buy out the sale barn, and then post photos of all my beautiful roses! But then, I'd have to start a new bed, and dig all those holes . . . . No, I'll just sit here and turn green with envy.

Hahahaha......Toni--you really did go on a spree, didn't you. Goh! You bought some goodies there. . I can hardly wait to see them in the spring and summer in the various places in your yard/garden.
I would have given anything to have been able to tag along on your trip. Goodness knows what I would have found to add to my garden.--I'm reckoning a couple of shopping karts worth. :D

I like how you do planning before you begin your rounds. --like taking the truck (excellent planning there), and making a round with a drop-off at home to minimalize on wind damage to the leaves of the plants being transported in the back.

Yep, this was a thoughtful and well-executed plan ....and it was sucessful.
    Way t'go!

Netty, buying plants in any quantity always counts!! What colors did you get?

I would gladly take all of you with me on my shopping trips, there are even more garden centers and nurseries not too far away so we could make a week of plant shopping trips.

I promise to get photos posted, probably tomorrow. The last few days have been busy away stuff keeping me out of the garden and mostly away from the house so I haven't had time to do anything but take them. All the plants are in their new homes.
I even saw a Monarch butterfly swooping around the garden right after I planted the Milkweed out front.
