I am not sure if barley is a herb, please move this topic to the right forum if I posted on a wrong place.

Well, I've heard of the important health benefits of barley before from the people close to me. I just want to know if it is possible to plant barley on a plant pot or do I need a farm plot to grow it? What else do I need?

I think it depends on the end use. Are you juicing the greens for a green drink or are you thinking to get grain from the plant?

barley grass, I would think, could be grown in a pot.

barley for grain would need to be grown in the ground during the summer.

hi shelley! i believe barley is a grain. i have grown one variety several years ago, Jet Black, planting it in the spring as transplants and harvesting lots of seed come fall. i'm planning on growing lots of varieties this year. i'm seriously looking into the 'hulless' varieties for ease of harvesting.

i have started barley in flats in the greenhouse to transplant out in the gardens in the spring. one year i never got them transplanted and they continued to grow in the flats thru the summer AND produced seed by fall in those flats!!! thus, you can produce grain from growing it in a pot.

Barley is dfinitely a grain, one that is the prime ingredient in beer. there is one other very good garden use for barley straw. Small amounts in a pond will keep the cloudy algae from forming as the hay decays! I actually use spent barley grain (from home brewers) in my pond to the same effect!
