While walking in my mini farm this morning I noticed a new bird one that I have not seen or notice before looking for grasshoppers/insects for its breakfast. It is quiet a handsome bird and looks like it is working alone. Does anyone know what kind of bird it is? KK could you possibly tell us, roughly, what size the bird is please? It looks to be about the size of a sparrow to me. Thanks. Post edited to say: KK, depending on its size, it could be a juvenile or female rufus tailed shrike. It's really difficult to tell though as I can't make out exactly what the beak is like. I hope someone will have a more accurate ID for you as it's a handsome individual and I'd love to know what it is.
eileen it is bigger than a sparrow and it is about 6 inches long with a very short beak. Sorry that is the best picture I can get with my camera . It does look like a shrike.
I saw that a "brown shrike" exists in Malaysia...but it has a white stripe above it's eyes. That brown shrike is migratory throughout parts of asia.
I say it's a shrike for sure them KK. I was a bit unsure of an ID as I thought the bird was too small. Is there any kind of natural history society/ birdwatching club or museum that you could take your photograph to to get a positive ID?
Sojerd getting close, some of the pictures in wikipedia does have a very close resemblance but they all has a white stripe above their eyes. Yes eileen it's a shrike for sure and I am sorry to say there is no natural history society/ birdwatching club or museum around here. Shall we call it just a shrike???
OK Sojerd first identification of the bird is correct, it is a Brown Shrike. The first picture did not show the white stripe above the eyes but in the second photo you can see it slightly. I saw the bird again today and this time I know what to look out for and I saw it had a white stripe above it's eye. So Sojerd you identified it the very first time. :-D Thanks for all the help.
Great news, KK. Is that bird a frequent visitor to your garden? That was quite an interesting problem. I learned a bit more about birds in Malaysia checking this out.
