I was hoping for a good crop of raspberries this fall but no such luck, and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions why?.

we planted them last spring and saw some good growth this year, with fruit forming on last year stems in the summer and what looked to be a bumper crop for the fall.

unfortunately most of the fruit stayed small and didn't ripen or turned black and fell off.

Just wondering if this is normal and i just have to be patient for next summer or if i should have fed them as the fruit started to form.

    thanks for any help

    Hi Dan,
One of the biggest problems for our raspberries is mold. this summer being as wet as it was was a very moldy summer. The other problem we had, but not this year, was moles tunneling under the rows in search of their next grub, disrupting the root growth and making dead air space and the roots had no place to go in search of more moisture to produce a new crop of berries. This year we ran a drip line and fertilized a few times with fish emulsion, the moles didn't seem to like it any. Raspberries also like full sun. The variety you planted may or may not be a fall producing berry. Usually we get a decent fall crop, but not this year. My FIL planted a new crop last fall and his did very well this fall. I think he planted a variety called Caroline. The existing berries we have have been here for 40 years or more. My husbands grandfather brought them over from Europe and they have no known name to us, they have the best flavor of any we have tried so far, but they don't hold up very well. they are very fragile.

    thanks carolyn,

i'm putting it down to a new planting that is still getting its roots settled. Also been struggling with cane borers which might have affected it.

Hi Dan, You could very well be right. What variety did you plant and did you get any to try this year?
