Well i have started on my plans for next Spring,..but i still have a fair bit to go,..i decided to grow a few "Cleome hassleriana",..as i was sent seeds from the USA,..i was told they are fragrant,..also "Brugmansia 'Datura metel',"these are some 12 inches high and will have to be taken indoors over the winter,..lets hope they survive. "Hollyhocks",..i planted some seeds and they also are about 12 inches high,..as are "Delphinium",..they will survive the winter,.."Digitalis purpurea",..self seeded and are looking healthy. Philip you need to teach me how to start roses!! I have one growing over the arbor and I really need another one!!! Looks like you will have quite a jump on 2012 :-D I sprinkled hollyhock seeds this afternoon, digitalis and columbine I also planted Martagon Lily bulbils given to me by a great friend.
Philip, as you are starting seeds for next spring how long is the winter season where you have to keep the plants out of the harsh elements? I.e, when do you have to bring in your plants and when can they go outside without fear of a frost? Jerry
They are all looking great. Getting a good healthy start makes such a difference when they bloom. Make sure you show us next spring what they look like.
You're way ahead of me Philip. I'm just getting geared up for the big autumn pruning session before the frosts hit. I don't feel so bad for you now having to give that rose away as you appears to have some really healthy specimens waiting in the wings to take its place.
You are getting a good head start on next season. Well done. Those plantlets are looking awfully good, aren't they?
Hi Deanna, looks like you are getting ready for next Spring as well,..some of your seeds will start before then,..like the Digitalis,..and maybe the Hollyhock,..in my garden they gain a fair bit of height before the frost,..and they don't die back. The quickest way to grow a rose bush is from a cutting,..the guy in the link below is great with roses,..but i will make a post on growing roses from cuttings or seeds in the near future. Thumbnail ----------------------------------------------------- Hi Jerry, our winter season for the Midlands tends to be short,..frost and maybe snow from mid December,..for about a fortnight,..but just cold with a touch of ground frost before and after December,..so its about an 11 week winter which is hard on plants,..but i must add that all plants in my garden survive down to -19 C,..i did lose Fuchsia's last winter but then it was the coldest in 60 years. I have never had to take plants indoors,..however this year i am growing two new plants,..Cleome hassleriana,..and Brugmansia,..that will have to be protected,..i am positive about the Brugmansia,..i can either take them indoors or cover them with straw. ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Carolyn, a good healthy start is right,..they all look good now,..but in between now and spring,..i cross my fingers. ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Eileen, i have got over the new rose being re housed,..still its a chore looking after a seed rose for sooo long to then give it away,..but were it any colour but pink it could have remained in the garden,..i think i have seven pink rose bushes,..but with the cuttings there is Yellow,Red,and an Orange coming along. So you have started your autumn pruning session,..wise before the frost starts,..even if its a mild frost,..i also did some pruning,..on a rose bush,..a HEAVY pruning as you can see,..its on the rose bush to the right of the picture. This bush tends to be dense, plus as its close to the wall and with our damp weather it tended to get Mildew,..thinning it will help for some time to come. Heavy pruning. ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Sjoerd, i know you have Digitalis in your garden,..and i wonder do you have new growth at this stage?,..some of mine have quite strong looking shoots growing off the old flower,..but i am some time behind with my new Digitalis,..last year they were a lot higher in July,..and despite the -19 C winter they remained healthy. 19th July 2010 ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) 31st July 2010.
