Stopped at Nursery in Cedar Rapids.Eyes seen Cone-flower. Called Fire red. Got sticker shock $25 each. Going to see if Johnny Seed has it to winter show. And hope can grow it from seed.
Those are pricey because they are hybrids and typically hybrid seeds do not come true to type meaning you have to buy new plants if you want more, which means they make more money selling plants than seed. Check out the name of the one you are looking for, I haven't found any named Fire Red but there are two new hybrids that are described as having fire red petals....Echinacea 'Hot Lava' and Echinacea 'Firebird'. Some nurseries will give them another name totally ignoring the correct cultivar name.
I hope can find the seed. And I all ways plant in grouping of at least 3-but not $75. And take a risk of them not making it. Was nice plants BUT.
I was in shock when I saw the price of 'new' perennials in the garden centers this year! I wouldn't pay that much either.
New plants are nice and the hybrids are endless but as prices inch up seeds are a rewarding alternative. Varieties from friends have special meaning as they flower in their own places. My garden has many such places. Warm memories for years to come. Jerry
Lady Florist said she was looking for new Daylily. She was shocked when I told I had looked on E-Bay And one for 3 fans was up to over $400.
