Does anyone know what is causing my petunia buds to do this? I seem to have trouble with this every year, but for some reason this year is worse. I agree. They are going to seed. When the seed pod is brown and is open, the seeds are ready. Every black seed should make a new plant. Thousands. What color are they? Maybe you could collect some seeds for me. Welcome to gardenstew. Don
Agreed, that is where a flower was, and now has ripe seeds. If you have one plant you can pay close attention to, as soon as each flower turns brown, cut it off, including the tiny stem holding it to the main stem. This will prevent the seeds from being able to form, and inspire the plant to keep making new flowers, called deadheading. You can sprinkle those seeds on the ground or in another pot to see if more plants will grow.
