I have some cuttings from my Lilac trees that I am trying to propagate. They seem to be doing fine, but I was wondering if I should bring them in now that its starting to get cold out? Or, do they remain out all winter long?
My first thought was to bring them indoors during the winter. I still think that I would do that if they aren't too big. It gets pretty cold in that part of New York. Even just to put them in a garage out of the weather would be okay I think. Welcome to Gardenstew! DR is from Highland Falls, NY. But he's been away for longer than he lived there. Marlene is also from there. Dooley
If your temps drop below freezing you want to bring them in. Be careful about outbuildings, I had some plants freeze in the shed, it didn't stay warm enough during the freeze.
Thank you very much for taking the time to help me. I will bring them inside for the winter. They are only about 5 inches high and are planted in large paper cups.
Being that small I would bring them inside but I don't have good luck with inside plants. Welcome from central Illinois. Wannabe
If you put them in a shed be sure to put a 100 watt bulb or work light over them .I have put an electric heater but if lots of snow are ice you stand the chance of the power going out.I would love to get a Lilac bush.I had heard you couldn't propagate them.My daughter has about 5 of them in Montana .I will have to try it.Good Luck on yours.Let me know how it turns out.
