Due to the drought and extreme heat the pumpkin contest was not a huge success. Most people had the same luck that I had. My pumpkin plant died. I watered it, too. I should have planted it in the shade. Most people got good sized vines but no blossoms or no pumpking. The pumpkin that won was planted back in April before the contest was announced but there was nothing in the rules that addressed when they had to be planted. It weighed 96 lbs. biggest pumpkin ( photo / image / picture from dooley's Garden ) The smallest pumpkin weighed just four pounds and was still green. smallest pumpkin ( photo / image / picture from dooley's Garden ) The only other pumpking were the white ones that some children brought. They weighed 10 and 12 pounds. Other pumpkins ( photo / image / picture from dooley's Garden ) They did receive a trophy which delighted them. dooley
This was the first year and the rules were not many. You could grow whatever you wanted. I had yellow ones and a white one that didn't even come up. I wonder if it will now that it rained. dooley
Next year you could try an Atlantic Giant. But then, you might need a front end loader to get it on the truck, Jerry
I hope the weather is kinder to everyone next year and that the pumpkin contest will have lots of people showing off what they've grown. I'm pleased that the children got a trophy. It's good to encourage youngsters to enjoy growing things in the garden.
There is always next year .... love your farmers market and is that your stand at the end of the picture where the smallest pumpkin is being weighed?
Isn't there a way you can wick milk into a pumpkin vine to make it grow bigger? Maybe I'm completely out of my mind, since I've never tried it, nor grown a pumpkin, but seriously, I think I've heard it somewhere.
There may be a way to do it. I'll see if I can find any information on it. My dad did something like that with watermelon and sugar water but I don't remember how he did it. I wasn't into paying too much attention to how they were grown, just into eating them. dooley
Next year will be a new year. I'm glad to see a few got a pumpkin or two, but this is a pretty slim harvest for anyone. The ones that made it there do look nice, though. Glad you took a few pics so we could see them, it's always so interesting to see what is going on elsewhere. Thanks, Dooley.
