I have been searching for true purple roses to buy. I have tried tiger rose and angel face which all died very quickly, but they were not quite the purple I wanted anyway. I would highly appreciate some names of purple rose or some pictures of some purple roses from some gardens and how well the rose does. I have a purple garden in honor of my oldest niece and a true purple rose name would be the best Christmas present for me this year.
Here are the names of a few purple roses that I know of for you D2D. I don't grow any of them myself so I really don't know just how 'purple' they actually are. You can Google for them though and see what you think. Hope you find what you're looking for. Barbra Streisand Blueberry Hill 2 Cardinal de Richelieu Florence DeLattre Intrigue News and The Prince.
I put in an "Intrigue" late this year but I'm still waiting for a bloom dirt2diamonds. I'll post a bloom photo when it flowers next year and we can all be the judge.
Angel Face is a lavender color Incognito is also a lavender with gold at the inner parts of the petals Midnight Blue (tm) isn't really a blue inspite of the name, it is a purple/black velvet. I don't have any of these yet, but Hope springs eternal. :-D
This is my favorite, I've grown it for several years: Lady X Until I found this one, I grew Sterling Silver, but that one had a bit more pinky/mauve coloring, at least, in my garden. I prefer this cool, pastel purple. A hybrid tea, she blooms in flushes, throughout late spring and summer. She lives in spite of me - and I am a master rose assassin. The situation here in my yard is not condusive to rose growing. It is hot and humid and I refuse to move my few rose plants out to the sunny part of the yard. I don't spray or fertilize as I should. So I can't say that it "thrives", but it has shown it's toughness just by surviving for 3-4 years now. I think that if I made the least effort to accomodate her, Lady X would reward me even more than she already does.
Thanks for all of the rose names and pictures. Sounds like I should look up lady x since I do not have the greenest of thumbs when it comes to roses. Thanks so much for the pictures, it is beautiful. I planted Intrigue before and killed it. It needed a little more care than I could provide in my scorching hot garden. I'm going to google the other roses in a minute.
I googled purple roses and came up with three that I plan to purchase: Cardinal de Richelieu, Midnight Blue, and Rhapsody in Blue. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Hope to have some photos this spring.
It will be exciting to hear if the Cardinal will thrive in your climate, since I grow it in my garden.
Droopy, does yours take much care. i am not afraid of a challenge when it comes to roses. I hang in there as long as they will. I must admit that I have had more failures than successes. Is Cardinal as beautiful as its pictures? If it is, I may never go inside for looking at it. O.K I exaggerate but I will be adding a new seat/bench/chair to make sure I have a place to visit it for as long as my heart and eyes desire. I LOVE ROSES!
I've given my Cardinal equal parts of neglect and ignoring, relieved by some fresh horse dung. It's full of thorns and that special mossy growth around the buds, and gives me lovely flowers every year. I do wonder what it would look like if I pampered it.
Rhapsody in Blue, is my all time favorite Gershwin piece, thanks (I think) for letting me know that it is a beautiful purple rose. Yet another one on my wish list for next spring.
that was a lovely shade zuzu! i just wonder if there are rose varieties with deeper shades of lavender
