Millions of years ago sea creatures by the millions perhaps billions built their homes(shells) using minerals from ocean water, as they died they settled to the ocean floor. Stratification of the seafloor produced large deposits of calcium carbonate. Today what was once a seafloor is high and dry due to plate tectonics. Those calcium deposits are mined and now supply the active ingredient in agricultural lime. Jerry
