While the benefits of its pain relieving qualities have been known since the cave man days it was first documented by the ancient Greeks. Patients chewed on willow tree bark to obtain pain relief. The main ingredient, salicin is similar to acetylsalicylic acid. In the early 1900's the German company Bayer made aspirin a household word and it benefited from its many pharmacological properties.
