What plant filled the court rooms and hospital during the spread of Yersina pestis...it was believed the terpenes inside this plant stopped the 'bug' in its tracks?
Spoiler The plant 'Pennyroyal/Mentha pulegium' is said to be a flea repellent and was kept in many hospitals, public buildings and houses during the Black Death/Yersina pestis. Also Cedar wood was kept under beds and in corners around the house to act as flea repellents. Eucalyptus leaves, Lemongrass, Lavender and Citronella can also help in keeping fleas at bay.
Google is a learning tool, in some circles it is now a verb. It causes us to poke and prod in dusty archives seeking answers long forgotten. Indeed if it were not for Google I would not know that Artemisia was the wife and sister of the Greek/Persian King Mausolus from the name of whose tomb we get the word mausoleum. Artemisia, who ruled for three years after the king's death, was a botanist and medical researcher, and died in 350 B.C .Or that if I were a Roman soldier traveling the Appian Way that I would put a species of Artemisia(mugwort) in my sandals to ward off fatigue. Or that Artemisia was used in court rooms and hospitals to stop the bug. It has been an interesting morning with Google and Delly's question. Thank you Delly. Cough!! Cough!! Now to get rid of this dust. Jerry
LOL @Jerry, I spend at least 5 hours a week "Googling" just to get the information I need to come up with the quiz questions! I love it! KNOWLEDGE at your fingertips!
I don't know about this "googling" thing... I have a search engine that uses all the search engines, so it isnt just google. In grade school little boys made googley eyes at little girls they had a crush on.
