Rice likes water and it keeps the weeds down. I think rice is a marsh plant?

Flooded arable land is used to grow rice as it hinders the growth of many types of weed. Any weeds that do grow get picked and fed to the owners livestock - mainly pigs.

By the way did you know that the word Paddy is derived from the Malay word Padi which simly means rice plant?

Rice used to be the main crop around here. That and soybeans. All of the rice dryers have been closed and some are being torn down.
Yep... they like the water and yep... weeds are kept down.

The main reason that rice is grown in Paddies is that the weed population can be kept in check! Rice can be grown in "normal" circumstances (ie. no flooding necessary.)

and yes Eileen, I actually did know what the word Paddy meant, lol I was raised in Singapore, have lived in the San Miguel PI and Korea.......I loved living overseas!
