With ages up to 2026 years or older and heights in excess of 300 feet the Sequoia sempervirens has proven to have fire retardant bark. Up to a foot thick the bark contains tannin protecting the tree against fire insects and fungus. Flame scars give testament to this giants ability to withstand the ravages of a forest fire.

There are three trees that come to mind the Pitch Pine, Older Redwoods and the Giant sequoia. The best known of the three for its fire resistant properties though is the Sequoia sempervirens. This tree not only has fire proof bark, which contains Tannin but also has the ability to fight of fungus's that often kill smaller trees.
