Erythroxylum coca has been chewed by natives in the Eastern Andes for thousands of years. It was introduced to the Western Andes in the 6th century CE. The Inca saw the plant as coming from a divine origin and so it was used first by the Inca elite and nobility and as the empire declined by the general populous.
