I have some organic radish seeds that were given to me, and some friends have it too. All it does is bolt and go right to seed. None of us have gotten any radishes from that seed. Any ideas why? They did sprout this year from last year's plantings. Someone suggested planting them in the fall, but the ones self sowed from last fall have no radishes either.
Radishes bolt when the daytime temperatures go above 50-65 degrees. They also require quite a bit of moisture. Could it be that weather caused yours and your friends' radishes to bolt without developing bulbous roots? It could be also that the "organic" seed you received is a reverted hybrid that only sets seed, but is very resistant to disease/insects. This fall put in some Cherry Belle or similar radish, and enjoy your little red vegetables!
The self sown radishes were out all fall and winter long, and could have made radishes then. I think I will contact the company, even though they were gifted. I probably would not recommend this brand of radishes though.
I agree with MG. Reverted seed. I have grown radishes in summer heat as long as you have enough moisture. They will go to seed quicker but you still get radishes. What variety were they?
It does not say on the bucket. A friend bought them in bulk and shared them around. I will have to ask my friends who bought them if they know. It was a 5 lb bucket, and that is a LOT of seeds. The company name and number and website is on there, so I will call/contact them and see if we can get some exchange or something. Somehow, I received the bulk of these seeds. It is after 5, so I will try tomorrow. I have been outdoors all day working in my garden.
