    some problems I've had

Acouple months ago, I bought 2 wooden whiskey barrels outfitted to be rain barrels. I have the barrels connected to the gutters. I have had some problems with them.
    1. I use mosquito dunks but I still have mosquitos.
    2. There's a bad smell. I have cleaned out the barrel with bleach but I still have a rotten smell. It was a whiskey barrel. It first smelled like whiskey and that smell went away. Now the water smells bad, almost like pee. The water looks clear.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Peter

My first thought on this is recalling many instances of cats backing up to swimming pools and, um, adding to the water level. Any chance this is happening?
If you get that worked out perhaps you could keep a couple of goldfish in the barrels. I have three small ponds and no mosquitos thanks to them (just the cheap feeder goldfish from the pet store- many won't make it but the strong ones that do add fertilizer to your water!)
