Last fall we planted "Rainbow" carrots for the first time. We had the garden space and we thought if we got a few it would be fun. Here's what I harvested yesterday: Rainbow carrots ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) I admit I thought multi-colored carrots were more of a gimmick than anything we'd like to have in the garden, but they are colorful and make a great looking carrot salad! The white ones are white inside, and the orange and yellow ones are true to color, but the red ones are just red on the outside and orange inside. We can't tell the difference in taste, but they look good on a plate. Do you plant "gimmick" varieties, too?
Actually, Jane, I do plant things like this. they are a "draw" to my table at the markets AND the darker the color the more nutrients are in it. There is a purple carrot that is purple the whole way through..maybe called "purple haze". Plant away. These things make dinner "fun". I planted cauliflower a few weeks ago and they tre the different colors...purple, cheddar, vidi? and white. Red cabbage, pointy cabbage, etc....
I'm waiting for the designers to grow vegetables with barcodes so the checkout people will not have to identify the produce. With carrots in colors now the checkout lines will grow longer as they question white, yellow and red carrots….Hey wait!! why can't we have blue carrots Great for the farmers market on the 4th of July. Rabbits will starve as they can no longer find their orange carrots. On the other hand colored carrots will be safe from predators. It snowed last night. :-( SPRING!! I WANT SPRING!! I am going bananas. How will I find carrots in aisle 20? Wait till someone wants a parsnip and gets a white carrot. Jerry
Jerry, I feel your pain about the snow. I remember when we had a Mother's Day blizzard in upstate NY. If it weren't for the fireplace and a large snifter of brandy, I might have committed mayhem!
Those are beautiful! Would love to have those on my table, yumm! I am jealous though. Here you are eating fresh produce from the garden and we are waiting for spring to arrive. The soil is barely warm enough for cole crops under covers. Eat hardy, and I will drool along here looking at your goodies

Netty, that produce is pretty impressive! Definitely worth waiting for (but not for too long, I hope).
According to the World Carrot Museum the first carrots were purple or yellow and the yellow ones were cultivated to produce the orange ones we have today. Like the saying goes "Everything old is new again"
I can't believe we have a carrot museum. That is so funny to me. I also never would have guessed that they started out anything but orange. What a lesson I have had!!
