Thanks. I am however somewhat amazed to hear the mention of this at an international forum like this. I guess the world is fast becoming a smaller place after all! Only problem now is, that I am actually the Muslim version of the Grinch, (who personally loathes everything about the Eid festivities that will come at the end of this month of Ramazaan)... So where I had an easy escape from it all at the GardenStew, now means that everyone over here will also be joining in the celebrations! Therefore I will now have no place to run! So thanks a lot Toni, as I really needed that... By the way, I don't know why people call this the month of Ramadan in the west. As it is always spoken as Ramazaan over here (as well as all over the middle east)...

Actually I did some web searching and all the search results for Ramazaan come back to Ramadan. I found this site http://www.islamawareness.net/Calendar/ ... amzan.html where they say the name is Ramazan/Ramazaan when spoken, but is Ramadan when written. So it looks like since the non-Muslims in the west only see it written that's the name we know it by. Anyway, S-H, I know what you mean about being the Grinch..I am the same way through the months of October, November and December here when the Christmas decorations are already up and then the music is pretty much the only thing you hear for November and December.
I confess I am completely ignorant as to the pronunciation and spelling of the holiday, but I do wish all our Muslim members, and all of the faith peace, happiness, and a long and productive life even after the holiday is past.
I was in Malaysia during Ramadan. I really enjoyed feasting at the street markets once the sun set! Happy ramadan (can I say that?) to all who celebrate.
You know you've got a point there! Why is the city of Abu Dhabi is the United Arabs Emirates called that, when it is actually Abu Zhabi... But then again, the neighboring city of Dubai is still Dubai - Not Zubai. In fact if any one calls Dubai the city of Zubai, will surely make some of the residents cry! By the way, the holiday is only for a day, at the end of the month of Ramazaan - While the entire month is just full of day long fasting (from sunrise to sunset)... Now the Chinese new years - Yes, that I believe continues for 2 weeks! So that I guess will even put the carnival of Rio de Janeiro to shame! It's a bit more then being a Grinch actually... As this month is suppose to teach endurance and restraint. You also cannot fight with anyone during this month (be it verbally or physically). Well, actually you can fight to defend yourself, but you can't initiate any fighting - So for a habitual brawler like myself, this becomes a very big challenge indeed... And as for being the Grinch, well, I am a horticulturist mainly because I am also a true Misanthrope (someone who is sick of people in general, someone who is deeply revolted by the entire humanity)... Now on top of this, it is very clearly written in religion that fasting (from sunrise to sunset during this month of Ramazaan) - Is to teach you endurance, and build courage also (as well as condition the body too). And so it is mentioned that while you are fasting, you please don't act holier than thou, as you are to fast for your own betterment (not to show off). And if you feel that it is too big a challenge for you, then kindly don't bother with it (as God will understand). But knowing people's attitude in general - They really can't resist making a "production" out of everything. So that there invokes more disgust within me... And so that's why I became the Grinch! Thank you! You know what Frank? I think I will now go out and take a few pictures of some of the streets here (which will not be too different from what you saw in Malaysia) - And so upload them here in this thread!
