I picked up a package of double flowering Ranunculus roots (bulbs, fiddlybits, whatever they are called) then found out that they should be planted in the fall or really early spring.....not in late spring or summer in hot climates, which is what we have happening now.

So how do I need to store these to keep them viable until I can plant them?
Or would planting them now and in pots in the shade let them start growing and establishing roots, then transplant them in the fall?

Never have grown them but there's always a first time for everything.

Here in NC, we plant a lot of bulbs for spring blooming, Toni. Maybe this would work for you.

I would go ahead and chance potting them up and let them make the foliage, soak the bulbs before planting them. They probably won't bloom this year, but should return next year. Most bulbs, rhizomes, or tubers won't stay viable too long past their planting and blooms times.

Thanks gardengater and cajunbelle, I could find nothing about what to do with the roots (they look like a bunch of mini-bananas) if they hadn't been planted before now.

I kind of figured that potting them to let them grow if they would, would be better than leaving them in the package any longer.
