Nothing to do with gardening, and I know the children and Mark are a gift...and they have showered me with wonderful things.....but this is a different gift. It didn't cost a penny and was given to me by my Auntie after my nan died. When asked if there was anything I wanted to remember nan by, all I asked for was a photo or 2. I have never seen piccies of my darling dad, or grandad when they were young as my dads youngest sister 'stole' the family albums when she left home and nan never saw them again. Well, she recently fell on hard times, marriage over, not getting on with her kids and no home, so she moved in with nan to look after her in her last monthes. So......photos arrived back in my nans hands, and she hid them. After she died, when dads older sister was sorting out, she came across a chocolate box of piccies and put them aside for me. What a joy, I cannot begin to tell you. Pics of daddy as a boy on holiday, pics of my grandad, who died when he was only 42 after suffering horrendous injuries during the war from which he never fully recovered, but the thing that melted my heart....a letter that my dad had written to his nan when he was first in the army in Germany. To see my dads writing, honestly, when I read it the first time, I could hear his voice in my head. I will treasure it. Oh, I will post a couple of piccies of the family later when I have scanned them, just to bore you all rigid. :-D
What a wonderful gift indeed. I don't have hardly any photos of my parents when they were young. A large box of photos and keepsakes fell off the truck when they moved from Arkansas to west Texas back in the late 40's and they didn't realize it until they were unloading the truck. You probably should scan them all, put them on DVD's for your kids so when the photos fade or are damaged you still have the images to pass down thru the generations.
I'm so glad your Nan got the photographs back and that they have now been passed on to you. When my dad died my mother destroyed nearly all of the old family photoes so they have been lost forever. I wish I'd known what she was going to do as I would have kept them safe for our children. I think it's so important to have pictures of family and I'm really pleased that you also found the letter your dad wrote EJ.
I enjoyed this posting of yours, EJ. Lots of emotion in it and what a wonderful gift for you. It'll be fun to see your forthcoming fotos, EJ.
Bored rigid!? No way! It would be such an honor to be able to see your Dad. You are so right, that was a wonderful gift and nice of your Auntie to put them aside for you.
I too also don't have much pictures, my parent said that the pictures have gotten wet because of flood(again)
Well here is my legend. Here he is as a boy - not sure of age.....8 or 9 maybe? ( photo / image / picture from EJ's Garden ) And these 2 are from his days in the army. He was a tank driver in the Dragoons. Trooper Overton. ( photo / image / picture from EJ's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from EJ's Garden )
Oh they're so nice, EJ. You must just love looking at them. You're dad had a sweet smile at every age, didn't he? I see some similarity in the shape of your face and the curve of your cheeks and nose. Am I right? Thanks for showing!
Thanks for showingthese pics, EJ. I think that I see a similarity in the fotos and you (especially the first one)-- the face shape eyes and mouth. It is nicew of you to show these valuable pictures. You must be over the moon to have them now.
I can see where you get your good looks from EJ. Your dad looks as though he would have had a great sense of humour. A lovely set of photographs that I know you'll cherish and pass on to your children.
I can appreciate how you must feel Emma at receiving all those lovely photos as Don is in a similar predicament. When his father moved to Cornwall a few years before he died he had a house clearance firm take everything he didn't want, including a large box of old photos from the loft, instead of asking Don if he wanted them, so Don only has a couple of photos of himself as a child and hardly any of his parents when they were young. Needless to say we have kept oodles of albums to pass on down the family. Lovely photos of your Dad and I can certainly see the resemblance, especially around the eyes.
Indeed a great gift. Someone sent me a small Bible that was my Dad's and I treasure it. I had tears in my eyes reading your post...I am so happy for you...
