Red waxy stalk and "leaves" fast growing in early

I had a peony in this pot that died over the winter. When I went to remove the dead peony, I noticed small red waxy buds growing in the pot. I threw out the peony and decided to see what the red buds would grow into. This was a month ago in early March which was still cold and rainy here in the north east. I have not paid any particular attention to it and it has now tripled in size with more buds growing. The soil is old, I never water it and it has just sprouted I assume from a stray seed that got blown onto my balcony. Can anyone tell me what it might be? Thanks!

    Could it be a peony?

That looks remarkably like my Paeonies do at the present.

It's exactly like my Peonies too. They die back over winter and return with those little red 'buds' each year. It looks like a nice, healthy plant to me. :-D

Yup, most definitely! CMH - when you say you "threw out the Peony", do you mean the old stalks or the whole plant?

I was thinking the same. Did you just cut off the dead stalk or did you pull the roots out of the soil and throw that part out, too? Peonies grow from the roots every Spring, not the dead growth that is left over from last year.

Good to know! I'm so glad because the peony was really beautiful last year. I only cut the dead stalks not the roots and it's now growing faster than ever. Thank you everyone for helping me!!

See, in the food world my motto is:

When in doubt, through it out.

But, in the plant world my motto is:

When in doubt, wait four seasons, then pout.

Don't give up. Wait, wait, wait.....see what comes up.

Let that be a lesson to ya.
