We lost a television icon today. His depiction of small town America was so realistic as I grew up in a time and a place that was almost identical to Mayberry. His character in Matlock was also good and countryfied.
I read that today and was a bit sad. All the icons from our younger days are disappearing. Makes me feel old. dooley
I enjoyed watching his programs, and listening to his records. The skit he did about seeing his first football game was hilarious! Wouldn't it be nice if all actors/actresses would do programs that our children could watch without close supervision, our ears would not be assaulted by gunfire and filthy language, and there was some uplifting message included in at least some of them?
Ditto What Marlin posted. He was a real class act.Pray they NEVER takes his reruns off.Rather watch them any time.
Very sad to hear as I was raised watching his show. Its hard to believe so many of our older actors are gone.
Although I was very sad as I read the articles in the paper this morning about his passing, it did not hit me until just a bit ago. We had gone to a small neighborhood parade and as we walked down the street I passed a fella sitting there with a shirt with Andy and Don Knotts faces on it. Snapped a photo and shead a tear. Ironic he should pass on now, he was a true American.
I was so sad to hear this. We lived around the corner from his birthplace. One day I saw about 20 Harley Davidsons and the scariest bikers all posing in front of his house. I wish I had the courage to take a picture LOL. When we first saw the house we bought in Mt Airy, we learned it was built by a former Police Chief and his son showed us a bullet hole in the dresser -the sone said "Dad didn't realize his gun was loaded!" As we walked home, my husband said: "Are we buying Barney's house?" We laughed all the way home. I've met several people in Mt Airy who had stories to tell. He was up here about five years ago to buy a burial plot but then he did some commercials for President Obama and the health care bill, he became hated and targeted by the Tea Party here in NC. It was so mean, the hatred was shocking. I was happy to hear he was buried near his home on the coast. It will be easier for his wife to visit him. I loved watching his TV shows, I loved Sheriff Andy as a child and Matlock as an adult. He certainly made his mark.
If there is a town in the hereafter, It'll be Mayberry. Andy and Barney on patrol. Get a haircut from Floyd. Sneak a piece of Ain't Bee's pie. Play some ball with Opie, Miss Crump is still teaching too! Goober's working at the garage, but, Gomer isn't on that shift yet. Otis sleeping it off. Yeah, I think Mayberry is where I want to be.[/i]
I thought I'd share two stories from the local paper with you guys. The first is a wonderful tribute and the second is well... well, sadly embarrassing! http://www.mtairynews.com/view/full_sto ... mprint-on- http://www.mtairynews.com/view/full_sto ... ticle-Andy I met people who were proud of how badly Andy Griffith was treated, there was a general opinion that "he needed to be taken down a peg" I have never seen such a juvenile example of journalism! sad sad sad
