The winds the other day really did a job on my efforts to contain/tie-up the blackberries. I used some bamboo canes I had... and they just weren't holding up very well. blown-over blackberries ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) And... those high winds made me get out there and try to do a better job. So... out to the "junk pile" to scrounge up something to replace the bamboo. Surely there had to be some rebar, pipes or even PVC I could use. And there they were... right where I tucked them in. I had used a couple of them while living at the trailer park for trellis. Wreath/flower stands from my Dad and Mom's funerals. wreath stands ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) I apologize if it seems morbid. But my mom kept my Dad's... and we kept her's. Why? Don't know. Except maybe just one day they would be needed? Anyhow.... They were exactly what I needed to replace the deteriorating bamboo. And there was just enough hog wire out there, too, to finish it up. ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) And I had just bought some of those cheapie kid's pinwheels the other day. Hopefully they'll keep the birds away from my berries, because I've been craving blackberry cobbler for weeks now!!!
Oh goodie, another farm term.....hog wire......first chickens, now hogs. Do any other farm animals have their own wire? At least the blackberries are safe from the hogs. Is there wire on top to keep the birds out? Jerry
Hmmm.... now I'm trying to think of other wires named after animals... But in the meantime. No wire on top... it wouldn't stop the birds since they can easily get the berries from the sides. That's why I'm hoping all the twirlies will just scare them away. It's not like they don't have feeders full of seeds at their "beak-n-call".
I think the next type is pretty generic...it's called agricultural fence, the "squares" progress from smaller to larger, bottom to top, more of a rectangle at the bottom and a square at the top of the piece...Oh, and there are hog panels, too. They are 16' long each. GREAT for an arch for the garden. They are fastened to stakes in the ground so they don't fall over or spring back out... great for peas and climbing beans and such.
