Someone suggested buying a router to help with slow dial up speed and efficiency in opening sites. Some just do not open for me at all, It tries but waiting 15 minutes just does not get it with me. It is not all sites but some don`t open,, just that little circle swirling next to the site name. So I found a Medialink wireless router at a garage sale but before I go to the trouble I want to know if its going to help,,if not I will just sell it on ebay.

A router won't change anything. The dial up speed is determined by your provider, if they give you an option to upgrade that would help.

Also, which browser do you use? Some sites are not compatible with some of the browsers. I am on Ancestry.com using Opera because it doesn't like Firefox.

Dial up speed are limited by the modem you have, and your service provider. Are you using the modem built into the computer, or one that sits beside the computer? True dialup (the kind where you dial a local phone number and listen to the funny tones while it connects) isn't capable of using a router, there's no place to plug it in. Try this speed test and see what numbers you get. http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ Depending on the result, we may be able to find a better way. If you have real, good old fashioned, dialup, it may take an upgrade to DSL or Cable to improve the speed.

My modem is plug in type to the USB port. Just plain old dial up via telephone line. No cable out here and others are cost prohibitive. Although I have not checked AT&T yet. Problem is having to buy the equipment for BB. One I checked on was $750. just for the equipment.

Opening sites like that speed test is the problem.

The equipment should be part of the monthly fee. Which broadband did you try that made you buy your own equipment? There are companies like Hughes that can install satellite internet. See if it's available and if the price is reasonable. http://internet.hughesnet.com/plans-and-pricing.html

We use exede (wild blue). It's a satellite internet and is pretty reasonable. We live 10 miles from town in the country and don't get cable.

    Hi Mart,

If you live out in the country or even in a small farm town, as I do, a satellite service might be your only option if you want a faster connection. I settled for Exede (Wildblue) myself since AT&T refused to bring their optic lines out this far due to the cost it would take to run the lines and not enough people to provide the service to.

When I first set up a connection I had NetZero dial up. I thought it wasn't too bad till after I had Exede installed then realized how slow a dial up truly was.
