Last year in late August Calloways nursery got in not a shipment of perennials for fall planting but their first shipment of artificial Christmas trees. Yesterday I was at the grocery store and in the center section where they display the seasonal items during the year they already have .....Halloween Candy. Now tell me, how many of us buy the Halloween candy in early October when it usually shows up in stores, wind up eating it all ourselves then have to rush out the day or so before Halloween to try to find more? Now we have three months of buying it early, eating it ourselves because... afterall it will be old by Oct 31st and we can get more before then anyway...again and again and again.
I dread it when Christmas decorations go up in stores in mid September. It seems like in June, before the children have broken up for their summer break, we have the 'Back To School' ads everywhere, then as soon as they have gone back, the halloween stuff arrives in store, very closely followed by the fireworks for the 5th November, and before halloween has even been and gone the Christmas displays are up. And on Christmas day TV, Easter eggs and summer holidays are being advertised. GGRR
I can vouche for that, I work at Home Depot and I was shocked when last year, they put up the xmas displays in Sept...It got annoying hearing Rudolph playing all the freaking time....
They do rush it. I wish there were some way to make all the marketing people realize that WE HATE IT WHEN THEY DO THAT! I love fall and all the decorations but in August??? Give me a break. They push the Christmas stuff for so long that by the time it gets here I'm almost tired of it I think it's just wrong :'(
I don't like this stretching of seasons either. I get so fed up, and feel I've got nothing to look forward to because everything's been out for so long I just yearn for it to be over with. That said we never buy the seasonal stuff before we think it's the right time for it. And because the displays go up so early, there's often a discount sale before the season's actually arrived, and that's when we shop. I am toying with the idea of organizing a demonstration in front of the shops, with signs saying "Give us our seasons back".
I don't like it either. I try to ignore it all until it's the right time (like you Droopy), but it's harder to ignore if they play holiday music...
Imagine my shock when yesterday they had Christmas items for sale already at Costco . I bought a fragrant phlox instead , along with the necessities of course. I'm still going to enjoy summer and ignore the rest, but darn it anyway .
