We went to a party tonight, where we ate smoked ribs & pork chops & all the fixin's. A neighbor kid showed up with this bucket and had a salamander in it. His follks have a water garden & found this in it! I was surprised my daughter went from thinking it was gross to actually picking it up in the space of about an hour!

Heheh, your daughter is truly a critter lover at heart, isn't she WTx?
After a brief time to look over a new animal,
she looks tickled to get more familiar ... very cute. :-D

...... I hope that salamander didn't end up on the grill. [IMG]

Lovely marking and it looks healthy enough so I hope it was returned to the wild.

I think they brought the thing to the party to get the science teacher (my wife) to identify it, but also to show it off. My understanding is, the critter was going to go back in the pond.

My daughter caught a butterfly & a lady bug yesterday. When she catches bugs, we put them in one of those observation containers (we call it a "bug looker") and she gets to observe it up close for a while. After about a half-hour, she takes great pride is releasing them. I filmed her releasing the little butterfly & lady bug yesterday. She is fascintated by rolly-pollies and lady bugs and catches them often. I've caught her tilting flower pots to get the rolly-pollies from underneath. She likes snails too, so I have to refrain from squashing them in her presence. Last year, I was out in the yard alone & squashed one on the sidewalk. Later in the day, she found it & complained, "Daddy, you squatted my snail!" (For some reason, "squash" has turned into "squat" in her vocabulary.) When we see a critter dead in the road, it is referred to as a "squatted whatever". She also complained when I put out snail-bait the last time, not wanting me to hurt her snails. I pointed out, they eat our flowers, but she still likes them.
